For as long as I can remember, RSPB Bempton Cliffs has been at the top of my birding bucket list, and this week I finally got to experience it for myself. After hearing so many incredible things about it, I thought I knew what to expect... but nothing could have prepared me for just how breathtaking it really is.
The moment I reached the cliff edge, I was completely speechless.
The sky was alive with birds. Thousands upon thousands of Northern Gannets soared effortlessly over the cliffs, while Razorbills and Guillemots packed every ledge below. Fulmars glided gracefully along the cliff face, Kittiwakes called constantly overhead, and every now and then there would be an excited shout from another visitor as a Puffin appeared amongst the crowds.
It was sensory overload in the best possible way.
As an 18-year-old wildlife photographer, standing there with my camera surrounded by so much life was honestly a dream come true. Everywhere I looked there was another incredible photograph waiting to happen. Watching the Gannets returning with nesting material, seeing Razorbills and Guillemots packed shoulder to shoulder on the cliffs, and trying to spot Puffins amongst the thousands of birds made every second exciting.
The Gannets were undoubtedly one of my favourite species to watch. Their elegance in the air is incredible, and seeing them glide past at eye level before disappearing back towards the colony was something I'll never forget. They're such powerful yet graceful birds, and photographing them in flight was both challenging and incredibly rewarding.
One of the things I loved most about Bempton Cliffs was the atmosphere. There was such a sense of excitement amongst everyone there. Whether you were a seasoned birder, a photographer, or simply visiting for the first time like me, everyone was sharing sightings, pointing out Puffins, and enjoying the incredible wildlife together.
It's places like Bempton that remind me why conservation is so important. Seeing thousands of seabirds breeding successfully on these spectacular cliffs really highlights the value of protecting habitats like this for future generations. The work carried out by the RSPB allows people like me to experience moments that inspire a lifelong love of wildlife.
I left Bempton with a memory card full of photographs, a huge smile on my face, and an even greater appreciation for our incredible seabirds. It exceeded every expectation I had, and I already know it won't be my last visit.
If you've never been to RSPB Bempton Cliffs, I can't recommend it enough. Whether you're a keen birder, a wildlife photographer, or simply someone who enjoys spending time in nature, it's one of those places that has to be seen to be believed.
I already can't wait to return and spend another day watching one of nature's greatest spectacles unfold.
Thanks again to everyone who made the event happen.
